DJI Osmo 360 vs Insta360 X5

Two major action cam brands have released a 360-degree camera this year. For the Insta360, this is already the fifth model, but for DJI, it's their first true 360-degree action cam. The Osmo 360 has just been released and is considerably more affordable than the Insta360 X5. But how good is the DJI Osmo 360 compared to the Insta360 X5? In this blog post, we will compare the various specifications and features of the two action cams. We will explain in which situations both models excel, so you can make an informed choice between the two action cams.

  • DJI Osmo 360 Specifications

    • Resolution: 8K@50fps, 6K@60fps, 4K@120fps
    • Maximum battery life: 190 min at 6K 24 fps
    • Viewing angle: 360 degrees
    • Waterproof: 10 meters
    • FPS: Up to 120 fps in single-lens mode; up to 240 fps in panorama-specific modes
    • Storage capacity expandable up to: 1 TB
    • Price: €479.99
  • Specifications Insta360 X5

    • Resolution: 8K@30fps, 5.7K@60fps, 4K@120fps
    • Maximum battery life: 185 min
    • Viewing angle: 360 degrees
    • Waterproof: up to 15 meters
    • FPS: 240/200/120/100/60/50/30/25/24 fps
    • Storage capacity expandable up to: 1 TB
    • Price: €589

The first thing that stands out is the price. There's a difference of over a hundred euros between the two action cams, which suggests a big gap in performance and specifications. In practice, however, this turns out not to be the case. The Osmo 360 films in the same high resolution as the Insta360 X5, but offers even more frames per second. The battery life is also longer, and the Osmo 360 can also achieve higher frame rates in various modes.

The only specification where the Insta360 X5 clearly scores better is waterproofing. However, this advantage is easily overcome with a waterproof case for the Osmo 360. Furthermore, the Insta360 X5 has been on the market since April 22nd, while the DJI Osmo 360 was only released on July 31st.

Features of the DJI Osmo 360 and the Insta360 X5

Both action cams offer similar features and are evenly matched in terms of performance. That's precisely why it's surprising that the Osmo 360 is a full hundred euros cheaper. Of course, there are some features unique to one model that are missing from the other.

Interchangeable lenses

One key difference is that the Insta360 X5 has interchangeable lenses, while the Osmo 360 doesn’t. This is a significant advantage as the lenses extend beyond the camera’s housing and can become damaged if you don’t use a lens guard or case. With the X5, you can easily replace a damaged lens yourself, but with the Osmo 360, you’ll need to have the camera repaired. This means you’ll need to be extra careful with the Osmo 360.

Filming in the dark

Both action cams offer good low-light performance. The Osmo 360 generally excels with its square 1-inch sensor. This allows the sensor to capture light even more efficiently, resulting in detailed, colorful footage, even at night. The Osmo 360 also features PureVideo's counterpart: SuperNight. This is an image optimization mode that suppresses noise and optimizes the image using AI.

Editing

Insta360 currently has an advantage in terms of software. DJI's editing app already includes many similar features, but these are often less advanced and still quite basic. Insta360, on the other hand, offers extensive AI-powered editing options, allowing you to create instant videos for platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

Similar features

Overall, the features of both action cams are pretty similar. While the image quality varies slightly between cameras, it's difficult to clearly identify one model as superior. The Insta360 X5 does appear slightly sharper, but both models offer excellent stabilization, horizontal leveling, and AI tracking.

Conclusion

Both action cams are incredibly good and deliver impressive performance, but which is better? That depends on what's important to you.

  • Insta360 X5 : Interchangeable lenses, sharper images, ease of use
  • Osmo 360 : Better performance in the dark, cheaper, more compact

If you're looking for maximum image quality, flexibility, and ease of use, choose the Insta360 X5. For a more compact and affordable camera that performs better in the dark, the DJI Osmo 360 is the best choice.
