Selection aid Tripod

What types of tripods are there?

Tripods come in different shapes and sizes with their own applications. Below we describe the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of tripods and what you can use them for.

Tripod

A commonly used tripod is the large tripod with, as the name suggests, three legs. A tripod consists of a tripod base, leg segments, counterweight hook, center column, tripod head with ball head and a tripod plate. The three legs give you a lot of stabilization. Many tripods are also extendable, allowing you to take images at height, such as interviews. Also very suitable for taking landscape images.

Monopod

Unlike the tripod, the monopod has only one leg. This makes the monopod lighter in weight and easier to carry. If you need to be able to act quickly and want to make moving images (for example in sports), a monopod is very suitable. Do you want to take recreational images, selfies and vlogs, for example of your winter sports or active summer holiday? A selfie stick is often sufficient.

Table tripod / Mini tripod

If you want to take stable images from a table or other flat surface and you have little space, a table tripod or mini tripod offers the most advantages. This tripod is compact and easy to carry. Ideal for smartphones, compact cameras and action cams (GoPro). Very suitable for timelapses and close-ups. Be sure to check the maximum loadable weight in the product specifications.

Flexible tripod

Flexible tripods have three legs that you can attach almost anywhere. Think of a tree branch or fence, but also on the table. However, if you mainly take images from a table or other flat surface, we recommend using a table tripod. With a flexible tripod it is more difficult to place your camera or smartphone completely vertically. If you want to place your camera in special places, be sure to choose a flexible tripod! Also pay attention to the carrying capacity of the tripod and the weight of your camera.

What is the ideal length and weight of a tripod?

The length and weight of your tripod also depend greatly on its use. If you travel a lot, choose a light tripod. You often take a lot with you (camera, lenses and accessories) that you cannot easily carry with a heavy tripod. Certainly not when you travel longer distances. Please note that the tripod must remain stable when there is a strong wind when filming outdoors. If you are looking for a tripod for conducting interviews, you want to be able to remain completely upright during the recording. For most photo and videographers, a tripod with a height between 140cm and 180cm is sufficient. The MOJOGEAR 177cm 2-in-1 tripod: tripod & monopod is height adjustable up to 177cm and therefore high enough, even for interviews with tall people.

What is the best material for a tripod?

Most tripods are made of aluminum, plastic or carbon. The material largely determines the weight and price of a tripod. Carbon is very strong and at the same time ultra lightweight and therefore ideal to take with you. The price of carbon fiber tripods is generally higher than, for example, aluminum or plastic tripods. Aluminum is a bit heavier and can get cold when it is cold outside. Do you have a lower budget? Then choose plastic. Plastic tripods can certainly have a very good price/quality ratio. When purchasing a plastic tripod, we advise you to look extra carefully at the reviews of others to avoid a bad purchase.

What is the difference between a photo tripod and a video tripod?

The main difference between a photo tripod and a video tripod is in the tripod head . A video head contains fluid (often oil) that dampens vibrations and slows down movements so that your images are nice and smooth. Are you looking for a video tripod? Then we recommend that you look carefully at the length of the arm. With a long arm you can make the tripod head move more subtly. Tip: If you are looking for a tripod that you can use in combination with your smartphone, check carefully whether a phone holder is included. All MOJOGEAR tripods come with a phone holder as standard.

Which tripod to order

The above information and tips for purchasing a tripod will hopefully give you a better idea of the different tripods and which one suits you best. We understand that your choice also depends on price, quality and that you are curious about the opinions of others before making a purchase. Take a look at the options and read other people's experiences with the tripods in our range.
